Conure cock tossing out baby chicks

by Lynn
(Austria)

my green cheek conure cock bird keeps tossing out the newly hatched chicks from the nest box. As soon as they are born he tosses out both the egg shell and baby chick. I have lost 5 baby chicks now. He is experienced as has had 10 babies prior to starting this . What would make him dump out his chicks. They didn't look deformed

You need to remove the male as soon as there are fertile eggs so this will stop. Fact of the matter is he is NOT necessary as the males do not feed the chicks nor do they sit with them to keep them warm. This is the hen's job and is a lot of work for her.

The other issue is you should not be breeding birds more than once a year. If you breed more than that, the hen becomes depeleted of vitamins, minerals and basic nutrients needed to keep healthy. So, if you are breeding more than one time a year, stop that before your hen is lost. Overbreeding leaves the hens open to all kinds of infections because as the nutrients are used up by her body, her immune system starts to fail as well and leaves her open to whatever come along.

Thanks for writing,
Linda
