conure constant eating and salivating

by joan dronfield

My 20 year old mitred conure has for the last few months been constantly eating. now recently I have noticed when he is resting, he salivates. I notice also that his beak always seems to be open slightly. does his lower beak have to be trimmed, and is this causung his problem.

I do not want to stress him at his age, by taking him to the vet. he hates anyone to handle him except my husband. He has his freedom around the house and is only caged at night or when we go out. We are at home all day, so he has plenty of attention. I would be very grateful for any advice. thankyou

Conure needing beak trim and may be sick
by: Tracie

There is no way Dr B or any avian vet can help your bird over the Internet. Your bird must be examined to determine what is wrong for the proper diagnosis and treatment to be giving. And if the beak needs to be trimmed, it absolutely needs an avian vet. (Abnormal beak growth can be a sign of disease)

Your bird will experience more stress by sitting there ill and slowing dying than being handled by an experienced avian vet and getting treatment.

Please use this Find an Avian Vet link to find an avian vet for your bird so it can be examined to determine what is wrong and what the potential treatment might be.
