Bird beak broken
by: Tracie

Dr. B has answered similar questions like this before.

You need to be very careful with the beak. If the bird is comfortable with you using a soft nail file to smooth out any sharp edges, then it is fine for you to do that. If he acts like it hurts, then don't do it.

It would be best to have an avian vet do any major trimming. A bird can bleed to death quickly if the beak starts to bleed and you can not stop it.

This almost happened to one of my birds when a breeder friend took it upon herself to trim our bird's beak when she was supposed to just be trimming the wings. We heard the bird screech and when we turned around he was bleeding bad. It took her about 20 minutes to stop the bleeding with a hot iron thing. It hurt the bird very bad and he could only eat soft food for about a week.

Beak trimmings should be left to the avian vets. They not only have experience, they have the tools to stop the bleeding if they hit the blood supply.
