Romeo - Blue Crowned Conure

I am a new owner of a blue-crowned conure and I am wondering what a normal weight range is for him. He ranges between 161 and 156 grams. He is on Harrison's high potency pellets and eats a small amount of fruit and vegetables but from what I have tried he isn't crazy about anything other than banana, cooked carrots and apple. Is this an adequate diet for him? I appreciate any information that anyone can give me. Oh, and I say "he" but I am actually not sure because he has not been DNA tested.

Conure weight

Nancy, thanks for writing! I did a quick check with an internet search and found that your Conure will probably weigh 6.7 ounces or 190 grams when fully mature.

It sounds like he is on a very good diet and just make sure he eats no more than 10% of his total diet in fruit and/or veggies. Too much apple will give him stomach upsets, so those should be fed in very small amounts.

I might also recommend you do a search on the internet for more information about your bird, and you may find even more information about him from others who have them.

If your baby has not been to an Avian Vet, I'd recommend he be taken for a checkup to make sure he is in great health. Signs of illness include weight loss, lethargy, low appetite and stomach upsets. Other signs are sitting fluffed up all the time, discharges from eyes, nose or anus. Birds cover up their illnesses, so if we don't know what to look for, our birds can be very ill before we even realize it. In the wild, a sick or injured bird is a dead bird as the flock will chase them away to die alone. Parrots are still very much wild animals and will behave as they would in the wild. I love that about them, and once one trusts you, you have really accomplished something. Never betray that trust as parrots don't give it easily.

Again, thanks for writing, and write more when you can. Thanks Much for the lovely picture of your little sweetie as everyone loves to see people's birds!

Linda
