Conure with constant pin feathers

Conure

I have a green cheek conure, she is 3 years old and I've had her since she was 6 months old. She always seems to have pin feathers on her head. Her feathers are also dull. She is eating a combination of Roudybush and Kaytee Pro Health. Probably at least 70% of her feed is Roudybush. She also gets spinach or other vegetables and dried fruit occasionally. I've been doing some research on it on my own and I'm thinking she could not be getting enough sunlight or its another underlying problem, but I'm not exactly sure what. Or maybe she needs more vegetables
Thank you!

Bird with pin feathers
by: The Avian Vet

The diet is good and is not likely to be nutritional. However, adding organic red palm oil, Sunshine Factor from HEALx can improve skin and feather quality. Proper lighting does play a role in feather health.

I recommend an artificial UV full spectrum light (ZooMed Avian SunLamp) for 3-4 hours per day, split in two sessions. The presence of pin feathers is OK, even if it seems like along time. Molt can last for weeks and months in some cases and does not necessarily indicate that there is a problem. I recommend that you have your bird seen by an avian veterinarian annually for check ups to be sure that everything is OK. Now would be a good tine for one of those check ups.
