What can I do about a cataract in one of my birds eyes? Can we do surgery to correct this situation?

Cataract surgery for birds
by: The Avian Vet

Depending on the size of the bird, it is possible. It is a specialty procedure that needs to be done by an ophthalmologist with special equipment and special anesthesia. The cost can be very high, into the thousands. It is not a surgery that is commonly done.

Correcting bird cataracts?

You'll need to Find an Avian Vet in your area and ask this same question. They should be able to do surgery where they replace the lens of the eye like in humans. In humans, it does not take long, and there appears to be little soreness. Of course, avian vet would most likely give you drops to use several times a day.

Make sure you are going to an Avian Vet only as dog and cat vets will not be able to help you at all.

Let us know how this goes and what avian vet has to say as this is an interesting question we'd all like to hear the answer to.
