Covered breathing hole

My parakeet who is 10 years old and seems very healthy has one of his breathing holes covered by feathers and closed. seems it just closed up. He seems to breathe fine, but i worry because he had an infection 5 years ago, but the vet cured him. what can i do to open it up? tha nk you. marian
