crest broken

by mrs. wilson
(oregon)

My poor female cockatiel glided a short distance against a wall it scraped off her crest feathers she did not bleed or cry but it looks like a reverse mohawk. I feel awful she seems fine but will these grow back? Never seen this before :( she is clipped and is 2 yrs old. Any suggestions?

I'm not sure I understand your question. If the bird's wings are clipped, then how did she glide along any wall long enough to tear out her crest unless the wall was rock or barbed wire?

Considering the possibility for infection if there is any skin broken, you'll need to take her to be examined by an Avian Vet.

Correctly clipped birds cannot get enough lift to glide along anything. The 4-6 primary flight feathers, which are the long ones at the ends of each wing are the only feathers that need to be clipped. When these are clipped, bird will glide gently to the floor and not have enough speed up or lift to take any feathers off in the process.

Please see an Avian Vet and make sure your bird's wings are correctly clipped and make sure she does not need medicine for a pending infection.

She will be okay!

Poor baby!! If the feathers are the only damage- they will molt out sometime in the next year. I am hoping she didn't damage her head/brain with the force of the crash?? Any possibility of this needs immediate veterinary care!
