Curling feathers - Cockatiel

Hi, we have a young female cocktail (less than 1 year old). A friend of noticed today that her wing feathers are starting to curl. This is the same thing that happened to her bird who is our birds brother. She had contacted the breeder who said it is a calcium deficiency.

Our bird is in a large aviary type cage with 3 other birds. They have seed, pellet, soaked grain and legumes, fruit and veg daily. They also have a calcium bell in there that I see them eating daily. None of the other birds' feathers are curling. There are no other changes in her -still active and alert, eating well, poops normal, no vomiting or running nose.

I have attached a photo, I hope it is clear enough to see. They are the white feathers under the grey ones on her wings. May friends cockatiels' feathers are more pronounced. Thanks in advance, Felicity

Thanks Tracie and Alex. Are you two of the vets that comment on the questions? I'm not so sure this is a purely nutritional problem. The reason I say that is because my other birds are showing no signs, the cockatiel showing signs is out of the same clutch as another whose feathers are worse. Further more, our bird and the other bird are on very different diets, so I'm thinking what I'm feeding is actually helping to prevent or slow down the progression of what is happening. I'm really wondering about possible genetic predispositions that can be prevented or slowed through specific diet. I hear what the both of you are saying about pellet feeding, but other people have different ideas, and I'd rather have my birds have a varied diet, just as for good health humans need to. I do thank you for your comments though.

The only way to insure your bird is getting the proper nutrition is to feed your bird 80% high quality pellets and only 20% treats.
