Dandruff on an African Grey Congo
by: Anonymous

A good shower on her 'in shower' perch once a week helps lots with Kenya's itching and dandruff stuff. Plus she is less likely to pull out feathers due to itching skin. No need to use shampoo.

Make sure the water is not too hot or too cold.

Kenya takes care of the in between showers herself in her water bowl.

Regular bathing will control excessive dandruff. Your bird should be eating a good pellet diet, such as Harrison's, which contains omega fatty acids. This will help to keep his skin healthy.

Bathing should be done 2-3 times weekly, with at least one time using Avi-x Bird rain; the other baths should be plain water. (Avi-x is sold on this site at a good discount.)

Finally, it may be necessary to put in a humidifier to prevent dry skin. Humidity for parrots should be 60%. Finally, regular (annual) veterinary exams will help to prevent problems by finding them early if they exist.
