Dead Nanday Conure

What would make a conure have an egg after 21 1/2 years. I thought She was a male all this time and have not had one issue with her. After reading many other posts i realize now that much of her crazy behaviour was female all along but it didn't really matter... i loved her anyway.

She always ate well and been very healthy until 4 years ago her molts began to wear her down and she began to pluck and scratch. They began to get worst...she's been on hydroxazine for allergy, antibiotics and anti inflammatory for infection and pain.

It seemed to pass until i noticed a swelling in her under belly. After ultra sound revealing fluid mass in her we removed it. 3 days after that and another ultra sound it revealed an egg. The vet did her very best and removed half but was unable to get it all. The remains where up high and twisted up inside her... the egg was huge...she passed away on the table. I noticed after the blanket i brought her to the vet in had some blood in her stool.

I am heart broken and realize they have a life span average of 20-25years but...can you shed any light on this? Is there something i could have done differently to prevent this? I guess i'm looking for any answers other than...maybe it was just her time.

Nanday died

I am sorry for your loss.

Your avian vet can shed more light on this than anyone else, because your vet has all the health records etc. You mentioned your bird was on a healthy diet. Was the diet 80% high quality pellets with only 20% healthy treats? If your bird was eating 80% Harrison's pellets, then it should not have become egg bound.

Your bird lived a long happy life with you. The average life span is just that, it takes into account those birds that die younger and live longer. Just like the statistics for humans, it all depends on genetics, diet and potential environmental hazards on how long one lives.

Again, I am very sorry for your loss. I know from personal experience that it is hard.
