December molting of love birds with much loss

Kiwi and Mango

I have two three year old love birds who have been molting and are showing much of their skin on their breasts back and neck.
I hadn't realized to give them more than seeds and brocolli so I boosted their diet with seed, zupreem and lots of fruit and vegatables the last two weeks but they seem to be getting worse and don't like the zupreem.

They are by a window in a warm room and I cover them at night.

They are energetic enough, lessened their flight when out but with molting I expected that. Otherwise they are clear eyed, no signs of any other problems.

What should I do to help them futher?

My lovebird is molting more than ever
by: Jodi

I have recently had the same problem with my lovebird - he is 9 years old, and until September, always had beautiful feathers. But, my parents noticed that he started to lose excessive feathers when the construction of a residential home began across the street - apparently the blasting of the granite stone within a few hundred feet really upset him. I did speak with a vet assistant who told me that stress would likely do this to him, as my parents live in a very quiet area.

Also, I am planning on taking him to a vet, which is about 3 hours away (the only avian vet in my home province - no one else can really offer much helpful information). I have started Harrison's food with him, as no one, not even his breeder, ever told me that seed had the nutritional equivalent of potatoe chips. Nice, I feel so bad that I didn't know better. Anyhow, I hope your little friends are getting better, it is very distressing to see them suffer.

fruit and veggies

what are the SAFEST to use. I have purchased parrotlets, lovebirds and cockatoo. I give seeds, pellets and treats but what is the list of good fruits and veggies

Editors note: This was posted as a comment, and should have been posted as a question. Please refer to our Parrot Health article, vitamins in food article, and we just added safe and toxic fruits and veggies to our Non Toxic / Toxic for birds list.

Lovebird feather loss

You need to take them in to be seen. This could be a sexual maturity behavioral issue, or it could be skin disease such as polyfolliculitis or a number of other possibilities.

Nutrition plays a large role in this, too. I would recommend pellets, but not colored pellets with lots of sugar. The best you can feed is Harrison's. You should start that and it should make up 80% of the diet. The rest can be treats especially fresh vegetables. A little seed is OK.

Most important, get them to an avian veterinarian for exam and work up.

Your lovebirds are beautiful! Do you think they could be plucking? It seems funny that they are both having this occur at the same time. And both in the neck area. Could something be stressing them out? A new pet or something? My lovebirds don't like zupreem either, but they do eat Roudybush mini's pellets. You could also try their crumbles if they don't like the minis. I've even gotten my Grey and Severe Macaw to eat Roudybush Medium pellets. All the birds seem to like them. Good luck with your birds!
