Deworming and immunisations

Does a ringneck parakeet need deworming and/or immunisation? If so, when?

Thank you for your response! Yuo'll be glad to hear that I've already taken my ringneck to the vet, and everything is fine. I'm just doing a lot of research to make sure that my baby bird gets the best care possible!

Thank you. Love your website, it's very helpful!

Deworming and immunisations

ALL NEW BIRDS NEED TO BE SEEN BY AN AVIAN VET AS SOON AS POSSIBLE AFTER THEY COME TO YOUR HOME.

When birds move around, it is stressful, and they are likely to become ill with a bacterial infection. They can also have parasites inside and/or outside, so an Avian vet needs to do the proper tests to make sure your bird is healthy.

As for immunizations, I've never had our vet give our birds any shots, and they stay here at home, so I don't feel they are necessary. If there is something bad going around in your area, and there is a shot to prevent it, then talk with vet about that.

For the most part, a lot of immunizations do more harm than good for birds, dogs and cats. Just talk with your Avian vet about this. They will usually recommend some, and it is up to you to understand that all shots can cause more harm than good.NEVER TREAT A BIRD YOURSELF FOR WORMS OR ANYTHING ELSE. ALWAYS TAKE YOUR BIRD TO A QUALIFIED AVIAN VET AND HAVE THEM DIAGNOSE AND TREAT PROBLEMS.

Thanks for writing,
Linda
