Diarrhea?

by Pat
(Wyoming MI)

I got my parrots 3 weeks ago and the yellow headed one just got diarrhea. Is it something I fed her. Just fruit & nuts, a few chips, etc. I don't want to be the cause of this, so please let me know. She just got it.
Thanks,
Pat

Diarrhea?

As Tracie instructed, get your bird weaned over to a healthy diet. Feed absolutely NO people food and don't feed nuts especially peanuts as they are high in fat and low in quality proteins. Feed only 10-15% total diet in organic veggies recommended on the Harrisons' packages. Chips are horrible as are any people snacks. There are many reasons your bird is sick including being already sick from pet store.

Birds sold in pet stores are usually already sick with some kind of infection so have your bird examined by an Avian Vet in your driving area to make sure he is healthy.

Get some good books on caring for birds and start studying about your bird so you know how to take care of him.

It could be something you fed the bird. Fruit, due to the high water content, can cause runny poop. But if the bird still has runny poop, get it to an avian vet ASAP.

You didn't mention pellets in the diet. Please read the articles on our Parrot Training page that talk about parrot health and diets along with some training stuff.

Your bird should be eating mostly healthy pellets like Harrison's pellets to insure it is getting the proper nutrition. Never feed your bird vitamins or colored pellets.
