Dirty Budgie

by Kerry
(Brisbane, Queensland, Australia)

I got my pet budgie from a pet store and when I got him home he was clean, we've had him for about 2 months now and his head is dirty, especially above his nostrils, there is no discharge however. It's like a brown colour. I'm not too sure if I should be worried or not. He preens the rest of his feathers just not there. Is it anything I should be worried about?

Dirty above the cere

It is hard to say. It could be an infection or a disease. The only way to know is to Find an Avian Vet to examine the bird in person. Dr B can not tell over the internet if the bird just needs a bath or if it is sick.

Most budgies love to bathe, you can provide a shallow dish of water for it and see it it takes a bath. Be sure to remove the water in 2 hours. If a bird drinks water from an open dish that is more than 3 hours old, then it can get bacterial infections.
