do clipped wings grow back

by yesenia
(miami,fl)

i've had my quaker parrot for about 3 months and we hadn't clipped his wings. We let it fly around the house of course keeping an eye on it. My neighbor accidentally left the house door open and she flew out. She came back the next day but we clipped her wings, and now were wondering how much time until they grow back? she looks so restrained.

do clipped wings grow back

Bird's molt twice a year, so it will be the next full molt before they start coming back in. When you clip wings, only clip the 4-6 long primary flight feathers at the bottom ends of each wing. To clip up higher causes chronic aching pain in bird's wings and makes them fall like a rock. Be very careful about blood feathers next time you clip. If you cut a blood feather, your bird can bleed to death. Blood feathers are those still coming in and are purple colored while the ones okay to cut are white and empty of blood.

Linda
