Do Cockatiels "Spit" when they are angry?

by Grace
(Boston, MA USA )

Something odd happend this morning..
My Cockatiel was very angry at my husband.. (Bird is her name) she was sitting on the shower curtain rod. Lately she has been nibbling the wall.. she actually nibbles everything like a puppy, I have to watch her when she is out of her cage every second.. here nor there..

My huband was putting a face cloth over where she was nibbling.. she kept throwing the face cloth on the floor.. when he would go to put it back up.. she would screech and bite him.. of course he ignored her behavior and kept putting it back.. boy was she angry.. suddenly the both of us witnessed her SPIT at my husband.. it was kinda mucousy not just clear.. my question is.. is this normal behavior.. we have never seen this behavior from her before.. should I be concerned.. or is she just being a freshy face??
Any feed back would be appreciated.

Thank you

This is actually normal for a cockatiel when they are angry! Most tend to hiss but when they are really ticked they will sometimes spit! As for the normal situations where they are spitting I'm not sure what that could be.

I don't think he is sick when he spits...just something hs does once in a while to get attention...

My female spits a lot. Just now, she was sitting on my shoulder and kept making this little noise, spitting a bit of moisture out. I thought it might be for attention, but she wouldn't let me touch her. Then I gave her some nibbles, and she seemed to be hungry.

Spitting Cockatiel

My cockatiel actually did the same thing. The first time I just thought it may have been my imagination, but tonight he did it again when I was trying to hold him against his will. What ever came about your bird. Please share.

Cockatiel spitting?
by: The Vet

I am aware that cockatiels hiss when they are upset. But I have never witnessed or hear of one actually spitting. The behavior is normal for a cockatiel that is angry. Many of my patients behave this way with wash cloths. However, I know of none that actually spit.

I would categorize this (spitting) as abnormal and have your bird looked at for the possibility of a sinus infection. Has your bird been seen within the last year? Birds should see the vet every year for check ups and vaccinations. It sounds like time for a check up.

BTW, if the paint on your wall was put on in the 70?s, you need to be aware of the chance for lead poisoning.
