dodwn feathers

by Lisa
(PA)

I have a blue and gold macaw who is 8 years old. In the last week or so he has really started looking like crap. I shower him often but not so much in the winter. What has me worried is that on his chest and down his legs his down feather is really starting to show and look bad. He is not pulling them out as far as I can tell and he is not acting sick. Nothing has changed in his life, he stills talks, plays and does his tricks. He has multed many times but not this bad. Can you please tell me what is going on. I live in a area that does not a Avain vet and up to this point I have not needed one. I am really at a lose and do not know what to do. I would just die if I lost my Mac. Thank you for any help.

Macaw with feather issues
by: Tracie

Dr B can not help your bird without examining the bird in person. He suggests that you read his Feather Damaging Behavior article and then look for an avian vet.

There is only one vet that our readers have recommended on our Find an Avian Vet page, but at the top of the page are a couple of links to other sites that you can search for an avian vet. You might be surprised, there may be a vet in the next town you never knew about. There should be a vet within a couple hours driving distance at least.

I hope you find a good avian vet that is close by.
