Dog bite - removed leg

My Cockatiel (Martha) was attacked by my German-Shepard(Roxie), Roxie pulled Martha's leg off or out of her body,it has been a day and a half and Martha is eating and drinking and pooping even. Do you think she can make it through this and still be able to live comfortably, and is there anything we can do to help her? Thank you in advance too

OUTRAGEOUS!!
by: DIANE(L.I.,N.Y.)

You must be kidding! You've done everything you could do? I'm quite sure that if your leg was viscously ripped off your body-you would call an ambulance & be in the E.R. within minutes of it happening! You would be hospitalized & treated with antibiotics & PAIN meds among other things!!! How does your "pet" deserve less! You have some nerve being upset with the reply you received! If you don't understand that your bird needs to see a "specialist"(AVAIN VET)there is something very lacking in you! GET IN YOUR CAR & GET IT TO AN AVIAN VET NOW!!!!! No matter how FAR AWAY it is!!! With the attitude you have, you don't deserve to have ANY PET- ESPECIALLY a BIRD!I'm totally surprised that others were so GRACIOUS in their replies to your statements! YOU DISGUST ME!!! GET UP-STOP WHINING-AND DO THE RIGHT THING!!!!! GOOD LUCK to "YOUR" bird. He/She will really need it with someone as callous as you as its caretaker!

Hi Derek, So you do have a vet but it's NOT an Avian vet?
These are YOUR exact words "There is not an avian vet close to here at all I have already tried to do that and (my vet) said there is nothing they can do! I have done everything that I can for her".
What have you done for her? Your vet said that they can't do anything? This sounds very strange to me. Your dog's vet may not know anything about birds, which vets did you spoke with concerning your bird's leg anyway and they said they can't do anything for her?
And yes, your thoughts are right, this site is to give answers also to help people better care for their birds. Sorry if you had been hurt by what I said I'm sorry. Sometimes when people are NOT thinking or acting on the right part, I like to point it out to them without beating around the bush so they can do what's right for their loving birds before it's too late. I love my birds and EVERY OTHER BIRD.
And NO, this is NOT a page for perfect people, I AM NOT PERFECT and NO ONE is. I'm just blessed with a very kind heart and I love all animals, ESPECIALLY BIRDS.
I'm here on this site also to get help because I DON'T know EVERYTHING about birds. I love them dearly and I've their best interest at heart. I also try to help whenever I can because I know alot. I do hope the best for your dear lovely bird. Have a great day and God bless.

Hi Derek, I'm very sorry for little Martha, poor thing she must be in so much pain. You shouldn't be here at a time like this. Martha needs help from an Avian Vet immediately. A day and a half and you didn't take her to an Avian Vet? Derek, you should've done that. If she's hungry she must eat and drink then of course she will poop; isn't that the whole process in order? But that doesn't mean she's fine and has no pain. Have you ever been in pain and still ate, drink and poop?

You want to know if she'll make it through and live comfortably; don't you care about NOW, if she's comfortable or not? She must be bleeding, poor little Martha PLEASE, TAKE HER TO AN AVIAN VET, PLEASE Derek and thank you.
My heart bleeds for her honestly! I do hope that she gets the help that she needs quickly and I'll be praying for dear little Martha. Take care and God bless.

Dog removed bird's leg
by: Tracie

Nobody can tell you if your bird will be okay, not even an avian vet, over the Internet. If the dog had removed your leg, would you post on the Internet for a doctor to tell you if you will be okay?

Your bird IS in pain. Your bird may have internal injuries it can't tell you about. It may have an infection that you can't see. To keep your bird from slowly dying a painful death, please use this Find an Avian Vet link to find an avian vet for your bird.
