Drinking Water and food

by Lucia
(Brazil)

I brought him home about 4 days ago and it seems he's still a bit scared and I don't think he's been eating properly. I'm affraid he might not be drinking any water. I've seen him eating sometimes, so I'm really concerned about the water drinking. And sometimes when he get near him, he starts making some noises and shaking his head up and down... is that normal? How can I know if he's drinking enough water (or if he's drinking water at all)? thank you.

New bird drinking and eating
by: Tracie

The bird is likely eating and drinking when you are not looking. You can put white paper down so that you can see what it's poop looks like too.

Did you take the bird to an avian vet to make sure it was healthy? You might want to Find an Avian Vet to examine your bird. Then you will know the proper weight and can weigh your bird on a weekly basis or monthly basis to make sure it is maintaining the proper weight.

We have some training articles that might interest you on our Parrot Training page even if you are not interested in having a hand tame bird. Just learning how to communicate with your bird will help both of you to have a long happy life together, as long as the bird is healthy.
