Dropped wing and weak grip on Amazon parrot

by Natalie
(Minneapolis, MN, USA)

Our 15 year old Orange Winged/Red-Lord cross(hybred)** is experiencing what we consider neurological problems. She is falling from her perch periodically and her grip is weak. Recently, she developed a droopy wing after one of her falls. We immediately brought her to our avarian vet, who said it wasn't broken. This bird had similiar problems with weakness and weight loss 2 years ago and recovered fully. Two years ago the vet diagnosed that it was probably wastings disease. Now the vet suggests Borno Virus. We are wondering about vitamin A deficiancy, given the droopy wing. The bird is on Harrison pellets and is given veggies/fruits and nuts on a regular basis. Would Medicam or Celbrex be a treatment option? How about ways to improved vitamin A absorption without overdosing? Should we pay the $163 to test for Borno Virus?
**We purchased her from a pet store as a baby and didn't know anything about breeds at the time.

Bird with potential wasting disease
by: The Avian Vet

Wasting disease is caused by Bornavirus. Two years ago we did not know this. But if your bid did have wasting or Bornavirus, he would not have lived 2 years. It does cause neurological disease and should be considered in this case. However, there are many other things that can cause these symptoms. Nutritional deficiencies such as vitamin D3 or calcium can do it. However since your bird is on Harrison?s that is not likely. But he needs to be eating 80% pellets. Toxins such as zinc and lead can do it.

Meloxicam and Celebrex are used to treat the symptoms of Bornavirus, but are not going to help your bird since I don?t think she has this disease.

You need to have further diagnostics or consider a second opinion.

Dropped wing question
by: Tracie

I have asked Dr B to answer this question. He might answer today, but sometimes it takes a few days depending on his schedule. He teaches at a university along with having a busy practice.
