Dropping problem?

by Olivia
(California)

I just brought home a parakeet and sometimes her dropping will stick to the feathers around her anus. Should I try to wash them off for her, or is something wrong?

Droppings sticking to bird
by: The Avian Vet

Yes, you should clean them, and yes something is wrong. Generally this is caused by diarrhea brought on by stress, and likely has a secondary infection involved. I recommend that you have your bird seen by an avian veterinarian.

Dropping problem?
by: Linda

All new birds from pet stores and most breeders are already sick when they are purchased. Your bird has some type of bacterial infection and will have to be examined, diagnosed and treated by only an Avian Vet in your area. Your bird will die without proper medical services from an Avian Vet, and we recommend all new birds be examined within the first few days to a week they are in our homes because of this.

Thanks for writing,
Linda
