Droppings stuck to vent

by Susan

Lately our budgie has been plucking the feathers around the vent area bare. Recently we have noticed droppings stuck to the vent area. The droppings are black and tarry, not green or runny. Our budgie is female, approximately nine years old, and has been in good health up to this point. She is on a seed diet with a vitamin supplement added to her water. We have offered her fresh fruits (apple, banana, strawberry, melon, peach), vegetables (broccoli, spinach) and boiled egg yolk and would love to see her eat them, but she refuses them, plucking them out of her seed cup and throwing them on the floor. Her favourite treat is millet and she eats a lot of it. Do you have any advice? Thank you.

Sick bird with insufficient diet
by: The Avian Vet

Your bird is very sick and needs immediate veterinary care. Her diet is horrible. Egg yolks are high in cholesterol and will lead to heart disease in birds, especially little budgies, who are very prone to obesity and high cholesterol. Water vitamins are harmful and not helpful because they do not provide effective nutrition, they cause bacterial growth in the water, and they will often prevent the bird from drinking the water because of the taste and smell.

Seeds are deficient on 35 or more nutrients and are in insufficient diet for any bird. The fresh foods are great, if she will eat them, but they do not balance or complete a poor diet such as seed. Millet is birdy candy and has no nutritional value.
