Dry skin and eating habits

by Paul and Rex
(Nashville,TN)

Amazon

Amazon

Rex is almost 16 years old. He is a green amazon parrot. the poor guy is itching like mad and I am concerned for him. I give him spray baths but he still has a lot of powder and dry skin. I want to help relieve him of this itching. What do you suggest?
Also He is so fussy about his food. He seems to only eat peanuts now. If i take his food away and try to give him Harrison's high protein he won't eat till he get's peanuts. I'm worried his diet is causing the dry skin. Is there and way I can force a spray vitamin into his diet? Maybe into his water?
Thanks

Editor's Note: You will need to Find an Avian Vet for your bird so it can be examined to determine what is wrong and what the potential treatment might be.

Bird with bad diet and itching
by: Tracie

Clearly the bad diet needs to be worked on. First Find an Avian Vet for your bird to rule out health issues since the diet is so bad. Peanuts are a huge source for allergies and feather plucking, you must get help converting your bird's diet.

Then read our Switching Birds To Pellets article written by Dr B. Since he can't examine your bird, the only thing he can help with is encourage you to see an avian vet, read his article and get the bird changed over to a better diet.
