Dusky Lory Disorientated and screaming after riding in car

I take my Dusky Lory to get his nails clipped every 6 months. I put him in a small animal carrier. After riding in the car for about 20 minutes, I bring him into the pet store and he becomes disorientated, starts shaking, and falls down and starts screaming. The same thing happened after I brought him home. After a few minutes, he was back to normal. This experience is very traumatic to me, I think he is going to die every time it happens. Is it possible that he is motion sick or dizzy from the car ride? Any suggestions on how to remedy this situation? Has anyone else had this happen when transporting a bird in the car?

About my Dusky Lory
by: Charlene

Hi I am posting as a response. Thanks for your input! I love my Lory (Felix) like a child, he is a male, and has bonded with me. I bought him at a pet store, after he was there for 2 years. For the first 8 years or so of taking him to have his nails clipped, it seemed like he enjoyed going to the pet store. He liked seeing the other birds, and enjoyed it. It was only in the last couple of years he has started freaking out about it. Maybe he just got used to seeing me only. I don't know, but maybe regular trips would help, the only problem I have is that it is a struggle to get him into a carrier, I have to grab him with a towel, and he is so smart that he knows what is going on, and tries to escape me. How did you get your Lory to WANT to go in a carrier?

Car scared
by: Rosie

My dusky lory was terribly traumatized by separation anxiety, so I decided to take him on day trips, and try to socialize him. I took him to the pet store and let him pick his own travel cage, which he would hop into on a moment's notice. I tried to turn every trip into a road trip. It only took a few months, but after traveling with me almost everywhere, he was absolutely fine. Of course at the vet, you would swear they were pulling his legs off by the screaming, but that is just lories. Good luck with yours; they are wonderful companions. I lost my baby and miss him every day. Don't take yours for granted, and just be patient.

Lory stressed after nail trim
by: Tracie

I noticed that you posted this twice, so please wait for Dr B to answer at the http://www.parrot-and-conure-world.com/dusky-lory-disorientated-after-riding-in-car.html link. Hopefully he will have time to answer in the next few days.

In the mean time I suggest you purchase a Safe Pedicure Perch for the favorite toy spot and some Polly's Pastel Pedicure Perches for the food station and water bottle or other favorite cage spots.

Pedicure perches will help keep the nails trimmed so that you don't have to take the bird for nail trims, then you can just take the bird once a year to it's avian vet appointment.
