eclectus breaking wing feathers

by LaNelle Wolters

My 7 month old eclectus "Diva" has broken or bitten off ALL of her wing feathers. I clipped her wings after she learned to fly (not too short) and she has broken her tail feathers and bitten her wing feathers ALL off...I clipped the broken feathers off with a pair of round tip scissors. Now "Diva" looks like a round red & blue Easter egg!

Can you suggest something I can do? She has a wonderful diet of pellets (natural) and some seed...loves her veggies! I use to bathe her weekly but she seems to break more feathers after I bathe her, so I only bathe her every 2 to 3 weeks now....she LOVES her bathes,too....pleanty of toys and loves to play, very bright eyes; has a very nice large cage and is always out of her cage playing on her play tree and play top cage.....I cannot figure out why she does this.

She is such a beautiful, sweet bird...just looks funny with so many feathers missing! It should be time for her 1st molt....I spray her with Aloe Vera Mist occassionally...Will her feathers come back inafter she molts? .please help me, help her....any advice is appreciated. I am going to get some Avi X Bird Rain for her the next chance if I can find it....anything else you can suggest will be appreciated.

wings clipped
by: Anonymous

Thanks for the comment....yes, I do clip the wings properly and she is not sick...I just can't think of anything that could be the problem. It is time for her to go through her 1st molt.....someone told me that this could be the problem, so I am going to get something that would make molting easier for her. (Molteze or what ever it is called) Can you suggest something?

Wing Clipping
by: Linda

You said you did not cut wing feathers too short, and I just want to make sure you are clipping correctly. ONLY CLIP THE 6 PRIMARY FLIGHT FEATHERS WHICH ARE THE ONES AT THE ENDS OF THE WINGS. If you clip up into the Secondary feathers, the bird is hurt if not crippled.

If you have done the clipping correctly, then there is something else going on and you DO need to get bird to Avian vet immediately.

Sounds like you are feeding correctly, and I am happy to hear it!

Like Tracie said, take bird to vet and then think if anything is different in your home.

I came out of shower once when I had just acquired my two Amazons, and I had a towel wrapped around my head and body. They both fell off perches and were scared to death. They are still afraid of caps, hats and BIG hair, and oh yes, towels!!!!

Eclectus feather destruction problem
by: Tracie

First of all, we carry the Avix Bird Rain in our Parrot Supply Store.

What I really suggest is that you take your bird to an avian vet to make sure that there is not a health issue that is causing her to do this.

Also, consider if anything at all has changed in the bird's environment. Sometimes just because someone purchased a new ball cap can mess with a bird's brain. Please read the articles on feather destruction on our Parrot Training page. The articles will do a much better job of getting you to think and possibly solve the problem than I can here.
