Eclectus on bottom of cage

Ruby...the 15 year old red sided eclectus thinks I am her mate....when she sees me....she always runs to the bottom of the cage and starts scratching and making her "strained" noise. The last two weeks have been different. She is now staying on the bottom of the cage all the time. I get her out and she lifts her tail and leans forward.....but her staying on the bottom all the time worries me.

Two years ago she had 2 stuck eggs that were oblong and sideways that had to be surgically removed. The Dr. also removed a section of "tubing" that would make it difficult for her to ever lay another egg again. She has not stayed on the bottom all the time like this before. When I pick her up she seems fine....and lifts her tail. I don't know if I am worrying for nothing... If that section was removed so it would be hard for her to lay a egg again...what could it be?

Eclectus problem

I do not know what procedure was done when her eggs were removed. But, usually the ovaries are left in and just the oviduct is removed. This does not prevent the production of eggs, and she can ovulate into her abdomen with the oviduct gone. This can present with serious complications if not dealt with early.

Ruby is displaying signs of reproductive activity, which is very common in (female) eclectus. I recommend that you have digital x-rays done to be sure there is no egg in the abdomen, then you need to start her on hormone therapy to prevent the production of eggs.

You are not needlessly worrying, you have every reason to be concerned. She needs to be seen soon.

PLEASE GET YOUR BIRD TO THE AVIAN VET IMMEDIATELY! It sounds like she may be trying to lay another egg, and it may very well kill her, so do not delay going to the vet as soon as you can get there.

Thanks for writing, and let us know what happened here as this is very disturbing.
