Envirox Cleaning Products

by Big Mama
(Ottawa, Ontario, Canada)

I have cleaners coming to clean my house tomorrow. I usually do it myself with bird safe ingredients such as baking soda, vinegar, olive oil, lemon/lime juice. The owner told me they use Envirox products which apparently are environmentally safe and non toxic. Can you tell me if these products would be safe for my birdies? I was told that the products are made of hydrogen peroxide and lemon oil.

I would remove birds from home and not bring them back until everything is over and done with. There is more to these cleaners than just what they are telling you because they want to clean your house and get paid for it. Rug shampoos unless they are certified non-toxic by an Avian Vet are toxic for birds as are most other cleaners commerical outfits use. What may be non-toxic for humans or even dogs and cats may very well kill birds because of their small size and lung capacity. Be safe rather than sorry on this one. If rugs are being shampooed, leave birds out until they are completely dry and you have vacumned up residues.

Find an Avian Vet or a friend or neighbor to take them in for the day, and move their cages along with all toys and dishes to the other place. Put their food in locked containers and in closets or cabinets to keep anything from getting on their exteriors.

Thanks for writing,
Linda
