feather discolouration

by Michael Wardell
(Ottawa, Ontario, Canada)

I have a 2 year old, highly active, male Lutino Kakariki. This morning I noticed he had a patch of brown crusty feathers on his chest. I tried to get him to preen, but to no avail. His behaviour is normal, active as ever, but I am concerned. What should I do?

Crusty feathers
by: Tracie

Please help Dr B out a little bit here.

What are you hoping for Dr B to tell you? There is no way he can tell you what is making the feathers crusty, because he can not examine your bird in person.

If you think the bird just got food on it's chest because it is a messy eater, are you wanting to know how to get him clean again?

If you are just needing to get him clean, you might try misting him with a fine mist early in the day, and keep the bird out of drafts.

If you think your bird might have an illness, please take your bird to an avian vet for treatment.
