feather dysplasia

I recently had my cockatiel to the vet for feather plucking and itching.

He did a biospy and the results shown that my Charley has feather dysplasia. I have to go back this Tuesday and talk about treatment options.

Can you tell me more about the disease so I can be more educated and ask the proper questions?

Thank you for your time

Feather dysplasia is more of a symptom than a disease. It means that the feathers are growing in abnormally. There are many diseases that can cause this. PBFD, nutritional imbalances, trauma, low humidity, poor lighting, and others. Feather plucking can be caused by internal problems too such as heavy metal toxicity, intestinal upset, intestinal foreign body, intestinal parasites, and others.

My opinion is that you need further diagnostics. I have attached a document regarding feather damaging behaviors that you may find useful.

Sorry, I've never heard of this condition before. It would be helpful to do an internet search using feather dysplasia in parrots or parrots and feather dysplasia to find out more information about it and what causes it and all.

Let us know what you find out and what vet has to say about treatment options as your information will help someone else with a same or similar problem.

Thanks much for writing and we send you our hopes that this condition will be treated and your little bird can have a happy, healthy life.
