Feather loss

I have a Green Ring neck parrot for last 1 year. He started losing feather for last 4-5 months. Now he has bald patches around beak, eyes and over head which is extending towards neck gradually and his ears are clearly visible now. He eats well, active, move around, talks, shouts and droppings are also normal (same as it was before losing feather). No fluffing, sleepiness or laziness. He eats fruits, peanuts, sunflower seeds, melon seeds, tomato, cucumber, biscuit, bread, rice. There is a calcium block in his cage for last one month. He does not drink water. I dont know his exact age. When we bought him his owner told us that he is 3 years old. According to this he must be 4 years old now. But we are not sure. We dont have any other bird in our home. He does not rub his head and face. No exposure to tobacco smoke. No feather plucking. His whole body feathers have also become dull green. Not as shiny it used to be.No sneezing and runny nose.

Bird with feather loss
by: Tracie

You did not say what country you live in, but if at all possible you need to get the bird converted to a pellet diet. Please read our Switching Birds to Pellets article.

Your bird needs to see an avian vet ASAP. This could be a serious disease, it sounds a bit extreme for just diet related feather loss. We have some articles you can read on feather loss on our Parrot Training page.

Please find an avian vet soon. Your bird should be seeing an avian vet yearly for check ups anyway to catch illnesses before they become beyond help. Bird's hide their illnesses so that you don't often know they are sick until they are almost dead.

Please let us know what the vet finds.
