Feather Plucking

Hi, my one year old fisher lovebird has started feather plucking, he has a featherless ring around his neck, and down the middle of his back, and around his feet. I don't know why he just started... he pulls so hard that he squawks, and when a new feather begins to grow back he pulls it out. And it looks like he becomes agitated and just needs to pull his feathers out!

I have taken him to the vet, and they said it was because he was bored... but he has a mate, and many many toys and treats, or is with me, so I don't know how this can be. Around his feet, the skin is discoloured and looks very scabby, and bleeds all the time. Do you have any advice - do you think it could be a skin condition? Non of my other birds are doing it.
Thanks for your help!

Bird plucking feathers

Poor birdie, and you! I order for Dr B to help you, you need to share what lab tests were done at your avian vet's office, what foods you feed your bird etc.

If you did not go to an avian vet, then I suggest you Find an Avian Vet to examine and run lab tests to rule out infection and disease.

Please read our Feather Damaging Behavior article that was written by our avian vet for more information on this problem.
