Feathers being pulled out

by Peta
(Ipswich, Qld, Aus)

My cockatiel is pulling out his feathers and it looks like he is biting himself. He did this to the base of his tail feathers (there was alot of blood!) and that seemed to clear up fairly quickly (I used warm salty water to cleanse the area and he stopped doing it after I did that),

the feathers have still not grown back completely yet though. We now just found him with blood on his beak and he is doing the same thing to under his left wing. The feathers are missing (not many) but there is a little bit of blood and it seems like he is biting near where his wing joint is.

He has no other symptoms. He is eating and drinking normally, and there is no signs of boredom or depression, just his normal cranky self.

Please help! =)

Bird pulling feathers and bleeding
by: Tracie

Sometimes birds do this when something internally is bothering them. They are biting and pulling feathers to get to what is bothering them. Your bird might have an infection or something more serious. Please Find an Avian Vet to examine your bird right away.

Please read our Feather Damaging Behavior article that was written by an avian vet.
