Feeding Baby Conures - one won't eat

by Steve

We just removed fully feathered 6 1/2 week old conures from their nesting box. very healthly birds. One of the two won't eat even when hand fed. He likes to hide in the corner of the cage with his bother. What could be wrong?

Feeding Baby Conures - one won't eat

When you say "handfeed", I hope you mean feeding baby parrot formula with a syringe because these babies are not ready to wean just yet. They will be 3 months old before it is okay to begin the weaning process which takes time and does not happen immediately.

As for the one in the corner, he is sick, and the other babies are also sick. Bacterial infections are highly contageous, so when one appears to be sick, they all are. You have to have them examined, diagnosed as to what kind of bacterial infection and treated by an Avian Vet ONLY in your driving area. Do not wait because babies lose ground much faster than older birds when they have infections and do not "get over them" either. They can and do die from undiagnosed and untreated infections.

Thanks for writing and let us know what Avian Vet has to say,
