by Rhoda Varon
(Yuba City, Ca.)

I just bought a four month old cockatiel yesterday, but I forgot to ask the person who sold me the bird at the pet shop wehat the bird eats. What should I feed my four month old bird?

Feeding new bird
by: The Avian Vet

You need to start feeding the same food as the pet store was feeding. Your bird may not eat a new food that he does not recognize. Then work to switch him to a diet that is 80% pellets, 20% treats. The best pellet is Harrison's.

What to feed a cockatiel
by: Tracie

Dr B is out of town, I believe, so I am going to jump in for him. I know what he always says about this anyway. :-)

You need to be feeding your bird a diet of 80% quality pellets and only 20% treats, and seeds can be a part of that. Dr B suggests Harrison's or Roudybush pellets for your bird. Please read the Switching Birds To Pellets article
Do NOT feed colored pellets, ZuPreem, Lefeber and other low quality pellets. They are full of sugar and chemicals that often cause health problems and will shorten the life of your bird.

Please read the health and training articles on our Parrot Training page for more information.

Food for Cockatiel
by: Anonymous

Hi, At the very least you need Cockatiel Seed, they need fresh seed, fruit, veg and drinking water every day. Google, Cockatiel, and you will find lots of info on how to keep and feed them. Please get some seed quickly if you have not already done so.
