Female cockatiel with scabs and crusty eye

by Louise Brownlee
(Wellington, New Zealand)

I have just got a pair of cockatiels who are about 10 years old. The girl has scabs on her head and a crusty (but not red or swollen) eye and she sits with her head cocked to one side. They are both eating and drinking and chirping and pooing fine. Do you think the boy has been having a go at her or is it something more serious?
cheers
Louise (New Zealand)

Have a vet check her out.
by: Jill

First of all, I would take her to the vet to get checked out. It sounds like it could be Avian Pox. I have a female cockatiel that has Avian Pox and she gets crusty stuff around her eye. She only has one eye since her previous owner did not get her treatment and one eye closed. She is doing fine with one eye and every time her Avian Pox flares up, she has to get eye ointment from the vet. Please, be safe and get her checked out soon.

Cockatiel with scabs and crusty eye

There is no way for anyone to tell, over the Internet, what is wrong with your bird. You will need to Find an Avian Vet to examine your bird and run tests.

Cocking the head sounds like an inner ear problem. Your bird could have a bacterial infection that will only clear up with medicine prescribed by an avian vet, at least here in the USA we can't get anything safe over the counter.
