Female conure alone, male just died

Today I had a pair of seemingly healthy, noisy Sun Conures. We had been out and came home and I gave them a carrot as I do once a week or so as was suggested to me. I went back to give them fresh water and found my male laying in his food tub. He died minutes after.

He was chirping and climbing is cage, making noise as always and 5 minutes later he was dead! What could have happened???

What might have happened?
Could he have choked???

Also, Will my female be OK alone??
He was the fun and more colourful one :-(

female or male?
by: Green cheek conure girl

hi i have a 10 months old greencheek conure and i would really like to know if there is another way to find out if my greencheek conure is a female or a male rather than having a dna test done to it, this is really important and i have to find out soon because it's really important!!!! please leve a comment.

Editor's note: Besides surgically sexing your bird, DNA is the only sure way to know. Also, please post your questions as a new question on our Parrot Questions page in the future so that others will see and answer your questions.

Conure Sudden Death
by: The Vet

I am sorry to ear you have lost your sun conure.

It is unlikely that he choked. Heart disease is common in birds. Few things will cause sudden death, though. Toxins, heart failure, and trauma are most common. The only way to know is to have a necropsy (autopsy) performed. This is a good idea since you have other birds, you will need to rule out infectious disease. Birds can appear healthy and still be carrying disease, because they are excellent at hiding signs of illness.

You should have your birds examined annually and have them vaccinated. Regular check ups will help detect problems early.

Please let me know if you find out what happened.
