Eclectus diet when laying eggs
by: Tracie

Preventing egg laying can be challenging and often unsuccessful in birds that are chronic layers. Some things that can help: reduce the daily amount of light to 10-11 hours; remove all nesting boxes and other nesting areas in the cage or outside of the cage such as under furniture; do not pet your bird on the lower back; remove any toys that she is masturbating on. It is also important that if she does lay eggs then you need to leave them with her until she stops sitting on them. This will prevent more eggs during that episode.

The way to keep your bird healthy (at all times and especially during egg laying) is to feed a complete and balanced diet. The only way to do this is to feed pellets. Harrison's is the best, Roudybush is also good. Do not feed pellets with artificial ingredients, colors, or sugar.

Eclectus’ diet should be 70% pellets, and 30% treats, mostly fresh vegetables and good quality nuts. This will guarantee that she will not become egg bound, even if she continues to lay eggs.

She can lay eggs until she is 40+. This could happen 2-3 times annually. You need to have her seen by an avian veterinarian after each episode and have her seen annually even if she does not lay eggs. Find an Avian Vet

Dr B will eventually answer this, but please read his Chronic Egg Laying article for understanding how to care for birds that lay eggs.
