Foot infection?

by Jen

I have an African Grey parrot about 7 months old. Her right foot became a dark yellow, almost crusty looking discoloration that discolores all 4 toes. it doesnt seem to be causing any pain because she still uses it normally. She has only been on her perches and she has also been outside. Any suggestions as to what this could be?

Possible foot infection

My first guess would be she was using her foot to eat something that caused the discoloration. If not, then the possibilities include dermatitis, infection with a virus or bacteria, or other disease.

Foot Infection

It could be a fungal infection or a parasite colony called mites. Either way, you will have to take her to an Avian vet in your area for a proper diagnosis and treatment. Just make an appointment as soon as you can because whether it is a fungal or mites, it will spread to other parts of her body including both feet and legs and is going to cost a lot more later to have it treated than it will right now. Please don't use any home remedies or medicines you find in pet stores. Those do more harm than good as bird needs an Avian vet to diagnose and prescribe the right medicine for her.

Thanks for writing, and let us know what vet found it to be.
