Gender

My lovebird puffs up fequantly and I just found him outside on my sidewalk 2 days ago.Since he puffs up is he a boy trying to defend his territory or is he a girl?
And we did scheldule him a vet apontiment to make sure everything is in order but the appoinment is not yet and i really wanna name it i mean him especially since he is a new member of our family. Sorry for incunvently spelled words!
