LOVEBIRDS MEDICINE
by: Anonymous

for change climate lovebirds are sick so please tell me the some medicines.

Editor's note: In the future if you want people to see and answer, you need to post a question, not an answer here to another question, on our Parrot Questions page.
You will need to Find an Avian Vet for your bird so it can be examined to determine what is wrong and what the potential treatment might be.

Yes, I agree with Tracie. Never give your birds any over the counter medicines, even those you buy in a pet store because they can do more harm than good. In order for a bird's illness to be treated, it must be taken to an Avian Vet for a diagnosis, and then a treatment plan will be offered.

Also stay away from "home remedies" people may offer you as these can also do more harm than good. Unless we know what is really wrong with our birds, we cannot possibly treat them with any medicines. Birds are very susceptible to overdoses on any type of drugs which is why we ask you take them to an Avian Vet. Avian vets have spent many more years in school and study in order to know how to treat our birds, snakes and other exotic animals and pets. Birds do not carry any fat on their bodies, which means any overdoses go directly into the liver and kidneys to be processed. An overdose or the wrong kind of medicine can cause permanent kidney and/or liver damage shortening your bird's life by many years. Outright death can occur by taking birds to regular dog and cat vets because they are not licensed and trained in how to care for them. They may be wonderful with your dogs and cats, and you may trust them, but they will not be able to help your birds because they have not been trained in how to diagnose infections or in dispensing of required medicines in proper dosages for size of birds. Birds also have hollow bones, so with those two factors in mind, there is more to writing them prescriptions than just their weight.

Please take them into a trained Avian Vet when they are sick. It does not have to cost a lot depending on what is wrong. Simple bacterial infections are cheap to treat though you'll have to pay for exam for all the birds. Anytime infections whether bacterial or viral are present, all birds who live in close proximity will be infected so all must be seen, diagnosed and treated by the Avian Vet.

Thank You for writing, and we wish your New Year to be abundant and prosperous,
Linda and Family

Medicine for sick birds

What is your reason for asking this? You need to take your bird to see an avian vet for diagnosis and then the vet will prescribe the proper treatment.

This question will not be forwarded to Dr B because he does not encourage people to treat birds without a proper diagnosis. If you treat what you "think" is wrong, you are just letting your bird suffer, and possibly die, from not getting the proper treatment.
