General Questions Lorikeet

Hello, I own a rainbow lorikeet and want to ask some questions.
- I took the Lorikeet for a full check up the vet said that the x ray showed the spleen is too big. It was like a blueberry size. Is it true that it is too big for the Lorikeet?
- I fed the Lorikeet Avocado and I found out that is says on this website that its toxic but I read somewhere that its actually nutritious and my bird liked it.

- I cannot find pollen or nectar and my Lori does not like honey what shall I give it as a substitute to that. I feed it fruits, juice but it doesnt like vegetables.

- My lori only chews on fruits and leaves all the solid parts. It never swallows them is that natural? How much should a 6 month old Lorikeet eat in a day and whats the healthy weight?

- Is there any vaccine available? Vet told me there wasnt.

- I had to do a PBDF test for the beak and feather that is expensive but my Lorikeet suffers from no feather and beak damage. (vet said that it is necessary)

- How do I know if it has thrash? I doubt my vet knows hes not an avian vet and i cant find one.

- Can the beak and nails be trimmed? will they grow back fast?

- My lorikeet scratches itself alot it doesnt have mites but is that normal?

Thank you.

Lorikeet in Dubai

Below are Dr B's responses:

- I took the Lorikeet for a full check up the vet said that the x ray showed the spleen is too big. It was like a blueberry size. Is it true that it is too big for the Lorikeet?

That could be an enlarged spleen.

- I fed the Lorikeet Avocado and I found out that is says on this website that its toxic but I read somewhere that its actually nutritious and my bird liked it.

It is very toxic and you should not feed it to any birds.

- I cannot find pollen or nectar and my Lori does not like honey what shall I give it as a substitute to that. I feed it fruits, juice but it doesnt like vegetables.

There is no substitute. You need to feed 50% nectar, 30% fruits, and 20% pellets. You can find nectar on line.

- My lori only chews on fruits and leaves all the solid parts. It never swallows them is that natural? How much should a 6 month old Lorikeet eat in a day and whats the healthy weight?

Yes, this is a normal way for lories to eat. Rainbow lories weigh 110 ? 135grams. The number is less important than the body condition.

- Is there any vaccine available? Vet told me there wasnt.

There are vaccines available for birds; I am sure that someone sells them to vets in Dubai.

- I had to do a PBDF test for the beak and feather that is expensive but my Lorikeet suffers from no feather and beak damage. (vet said that it is necessary)

PBFD can be carried by birds that do not show symptoms. Recommending this test is the discretion of each Dr. I require it for birds that are boarding in my facility, but not all of my patients are tested.

- How do I know if it has thrash? I doubt my vet knows hes not an avian vet and i cant find one.

Do you mean ?thrush?? This is a yeast infection. IT will cause odor in the droppings, bad breath, and white to yellow plaques in the mouth. There may also be diarrhea.

- Can the beak and nails be trimmed? will they grow back fast?

Most beaks do not need to be trimmed. Nails can be kept short and dull with the proper perches. I recommend a pedicure perch as the highest perch to keep the nails groomed.

- My lorikeet scratches itself alot it doesnt have mites but is that normal?

This part of grooming. It may also be related to dry skin. You should bathe your bird weekly.
