Goffin Cockatoo Nibbling Neck/Face

by Sheri

My 28 yr old Goffin Cockatoo has just recently started to gently nibble the side of my neck/cheek whenever he is on my person until he falls asleep. He does this in a very loving & gentle manner. He lives in a single person household & I have had him since he was 1yr old. Is he preening me or indulging in some kind of mating behavior? Thanks.

I am no expert, but it sounds like what our birds do when they preen our "feathers" on our arms. They love to preen the fine hairs on our body.

It is not suggested that you let large birds on your shoulder, by the way. It sounds like you have been fine thus far, but one hormonal day your bird could take a fine chunk out of your face or neck.

I want to be clear that I am NOT trying to get into your business. It is not my place to tell you what your should or should not do. Many people allow their large birds sit on their shoulder without a problem. But there are those that did this for years until the day their bird suddenly took a chunk out of them.
