Goffins cockatoo destroying bottom of cage

by Dan
(Farmingdale)

We have a Goffins cockatoo for the past 25 years. In the past six months he has taken to throwing his food out of cage or onto the floor of his cage. He also has become very destructive chewing his the bird cage cover and completely shredding all of his paper on the bottom of his cage. What may be causing this?

goffin destroying papers
by: Anonymous

It sounds to me like your goffin is bored. I have 5 goffins and find them to get bored very easily, even with changing toys everyday, they still get bored. They are very active little guys and get bored very easily.

I have spokent with many goffin owners and they all have the same experience I do. It takes alot to keep them occupied, lol. but they are so darned sweet!!

Cockatoo destroying cover and papers
by: Tracie

My first thought is, how/why does he have access to the paper at the bottom of his cage? Please consider purchasing a cage that has a rack at the bottom that is well above where the paper is. You do NOT want your bird walking around and playing in poop and chewing poopy paper.

I don't know why your bird has suddenly become destructive. I suggest that you Find an Avian Vet for your bird, especially if the bird has not been seen in the last year. Sometimes when birds have something internally wrong, they act out because they have no other way of reacting to the thing bugging them.
