Golden Conure with "hiccups"

by Lucy
(USA)

my bird has been exhibitng "hiccups" or "gasping" occastionally for about 8 mo.s

Took to vet and treated for resperatory infection (got chest muscel issues with anti-biotic) then it seems to stop.

Later has again so I took video and other vet did ultra sound and am not treating (6 weeks or so) with calcium for heart abnormality.

Last week, bird started doing again. Sometimes strong soemtimes weak (from little gasp to whoe body and wings "spasm and a squak).

Any Ideas? Blood good and poop good. been sort of soft of late, though.

Conure illness
by: The Avian Vet

Since birds do not have a diaphragm, they are unable to hiccup. It may be that your bird is experiencing difficulty when breathing. This could be caused by an obstructed air way. Your bird may be coughing, due to irritation of the trachea or syrinx. There is already a history of respiratory infection. Your bird could have aspergillosis, or mycobacteriosis, or psittacosis. There are many different differentials that can present like this. Your veterinarian should do further diagnostics to determine the causes of these symptoms.

Dr B will eventually answer this, but since he teaches along with a busy practice, it sometimes takes a while. Thanks for writing.
