Goose with broken beak

Dear Sir/Madam

Our goose broke the tip of his bottom jaw off on a fence while attacking a straying dog.

He does not seem to be able to grip the tips of grass or pick up bread. His tongue is healthy though.
Does the beak grow back like a nail? The bed of the beak is fine.

Should I force feed him while it is healing to ensure he does not starve?
Thank you
Moyra South Africa

Bird with broken beak
by: The Avian Vet

Depending on the extent of the damage, the beak may heal on its own. However, it may need repair. If you have an avian veterinarian you can see, then you should go as soon as possible. If not, then provide foods that your goose can eat without the need to prehend with his beak. You should not force feed him unless he cannot or will not eat on his own.

If the bed of the bill is still intact, it should grow back. As I understand what you said, it is the tip of his beak that was taken off.

If you have an Avian(bird) vet anywhere in your area, please take bird to them as this is likely to become infected, and tetanus could be a problem if the wire is rusty, so he may need a shot for that as well. The tetanus shot has to be given no more than 48 hours after the injury, so hopefully, you've taken him to some kind of vet already.

The bird is more than likely in a great deal of pain as the bill/beak is a very sensitive area. Please take him to some kind of vet in your area for an exam, antibiotics and some advice on where to go from here. Vet can tell you what you can feed him/her, and may offer a temporary fix for the broken part of the bill.

SO, PLEASE GET YOUR BIRD TO AN AVIAN VET IF YOU HAVE ONE OR TO YOUR REGULAR VET IF THERE IS NOT AN AVIAN VET IN YOUR AREA.

YOUR BIRD IS IN PAIN, PROBABLY HAS AN INFECTION, AND MAY ALSO GET TETANUS DEPENDING ON THE CONDITION OF THE WIRE THAT TOOK OFF PART OF THE BILL. IF THE WIRE WAS IN GOOD SHAPE AND NOT RUSTY, THEN TETANUS MAY NOT BE AN ISSUE. TETANUS KILLS BY FREEZING THE MUSCLES, AND BIRD WILL DIE. THIS IS AN EMERGENCY SITUATION, AND YOUR BIRD IS SUFFERING, SO FIRST THING IS TO GO TO THE VET, AND THEY WILL HELP YOU WITH THIS.
