Green Cheek Conure Beak cracking.

I have recently noticed that my green cheek conures beak has what looks like a crack in the beak. They are visible on both the upper and lower beak. Is this normal? It doens't seem as though its bugging him but wanted to know if this is an issue to be worried about or not? If it is an issue what can be done to correct/ fix it?

Bird with cracked beak, diet question
by: Tracie

You didn't mention what you feed your bird. Do you feed your bird mostly pellets? This could be a nutritional problem if you are not feeding 80% high quality pellets like Harrison's or Roudybush and only 20% healthy treats. Colored pellets and cheap pellets that have high sugar and/or chemicals will cause your bird to be unhealthy.

Beak cracking
by: Tracie

It is hard to say if this is a problem or not. It is possible it will not cause any problems, and will disappear as the beak grows. The beak continually grows, but gets worn down naturally as the bird chews it's toys and cleans it on perches etc.

If you see more cracks, or you feel the beak may catch on something and open up, then you should Find an Avian Vet to examine the bird and possibly file the beak some.
