green cheek conure breeding behavior?

I have had a green cheek since it was eleven weeks old. We have always handled her take her everywhere with us. All of the sudden it is starting to bite. Nothing has changed in her/his environment. Do they get mean during mating season?

Green cheek conure biting
by: Tracie

We had a similar experience with our green cheeked conures. I felt like they when from the toddler stage to the "teenager" stage. (I know what I want and who I want etc.)

Please read some of our articles on our Parrot Training page and read the one titled "Answer for Biting GC Conure" because I share how we helped our birds through this stage.

What Linda says is true, often a sudden change in behavior is a sign of illness, and birds need to be seen once a year by an avian vet for a check up and vaccination, but I am of the opinion that your bird is just growing up and you might need to start some behavior training.

Sudden changes in behavior usually means that the bird is sick with some kind of infection. If you take it out in public a lot, then it can contract bacterial and viral infections from being around people. Birds have no negative gram bacteria in their bodies and humans and other animals do, so just a cough or a sneeze or an ill placed kiss can make a bird sick.

Please have your bird examined for infections by an Avian Vet in your driving area before doing anything else. I also recommend you keep your bird at home where it is safe from the infections of other birds, animals and the biggest animal of all, humans.

Thanks for writing,
Linda

PS this has nothing whatsoever to do with breeding behavior.
