Green Cheek Conure

How can I tell if I bought a male or female conure. This bird is only 8 weeks old. I would like to give him/her a name that fits the sex.

Sex of green cheek conure

Your bird could be a female and never lay an egg, but it could lay an egg at 6 months of age or when it is 7 years old or older.

As far as keeping the bird where you want it, that will be a training issue. You will need to know what gets the bird excited and what the bird hates and use that to train the bird. Please read the training articles on our Parrot Training page for help in training your bird.

This is just my opinion, I am not an expert, but I think you may want to develop a schedule with your bird. For instance, totally making this up and not a suggestion, you get the bird out of the cage at 8am, he goes back in at 10am and comes out at lunch at noon.

In other words, you become in charge of the bird and the bird isn't in charge of you. There will be cues that the bird will spend time looking for, like when I start fixing something in the kitchen my birds get excited knowing they are about to come out and get a snack. Or when they hear the blow dryer is signals they will come out for the morning.

The bottom line is just that they look to you for when they get things and know you will never, ever give into them throwing fits to change your routine. You become boss, but a great loving boss that they adore because you adore them.

Sparkey follows me around the house like a puppy. (Wings are clipped). Sparkey will NOT stay in his play pen or his bird stand. Sparkey only is happy sitting on my shoulder when out of the cage. How do I make Sparkey stay put on them?

Bird Age

Without a DNA, how long till the conure starts to lay eggs if it is a female? I decided to name my bird Sparkey. That should fit either sex.
Yes, I do feed a well nourishing diet for my bird. It gets the best, along with millet sprays & other foods. Thank you.
I do have another question though. Sparkey follows me around the house like a puppy. (Wings are clipped). Sparkey will NOT stay in his play pen or his bird stand. Sparkey only is happy sitting on my shoulder when out of the cage. How do I make Sparkey stay put on them?
Thank you.

Conure gender question
by: Tracie

You will either have to have a DNA test done or guess. We guessed on our conure and later when Buddy laid an egg we changed the name to Buddie. LOL

DO feed your bird a quality pellet diet. Your bird will live longer and have fewer, or no health problems. If your bird ends up being a female and lays eggs, you won't have to worry about egg binding if feeding your bird Harrison's pellets.
