Green Cheek Conures feathers turning black around edges

Feathers with black edges

Feathers with black edges

Feathers with black edges Black edges on feathers

I got my Green Cheek Conure a month and a half ago from Petco. Not the best place to get a bird I know, but I fell in love with her.

Anyways, her green feathers started turning black around the edges. I have no idea what is causing this. Perhaps it is the new home etc. She is out of her cage about..5-7 hours a day. I feed her Zupreem natural pellets and she LOVES them. She also eats grapes, millet, and sometimes other seeds. The thing is I offer her all sorts of veggies and she wants nothing of it. It is very hard to get her to try new things and I am not sure if it is diet related.

I also tend to go to sleep late. Could that be related? I sleep from about 12-8.

I really just don't know what to do. Any help is greatly appreciated.

Bird with black edges on feathers
by: The Avian Vet

The black feathers can be related to the ZuPreem diet. It is high and sugar and low in protein. This will cause black feathers. He needs to be on a better pellet. Harrison's is the best. Harrison?s should make up 80% of the diet. The rest can be healthy treats.

Stress can also cause black marks in the feathers. Staying up too late is stressful. They need 12 hours of darkness.

Other things can be causing this, too. I recommend that you have him examined by an avian veterinarian.
